The Use of Preoperative DEXA Scans to Evaluate Bone Quality in Hip Resurfacing

چکیده

In this study the usefulness of a preoperative dual-energy Xray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan to help in patient selection for hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) is examined. The operating surgeon determined intraoperatively whether the patient had a HRA or a large head metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty (MOM). The t-score was significantly lower in the MOM group compared to the HRA group. This indicated that DEXA scan is a reliable tool for the preoperative assessment of bone quality and can help in selecting appropriate candidates for HRA.

Bone density of the femoral neck following Birmingham hip resurfacing

BACKGROUND Resurfacing is a popular alternative to a standard hip replacement in young arthritic patients. Despite bone preservation around the femoral component, there is little information regarding the bone quality. PATIENTS AND METHODS 32 patients underwent consecutive Birmingham hip resurfacing. The bone density of the femoral neck was measured preoperatively and then at 6 weeks, 3 month...

Resurfacing total hip replacement–a therapeutical approach in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis and hip arthrosis

AIM Patients with incipient hip arthrosis may benefit from a relatively new therapeutical approach using resurfacing total hip replacement, but in those with associated osteoporosis, this type of surgical intervention is contraindicated, given the poor quality of osteoporotic bones. We assessed the efficacy of the antiosteoporotic pharmacological therapy to improve bone quality and bone strengt...

Femoral neck geometry and radiographic signs of osteoporosis as predictors of hip fracture.

A total of 125 consecutive hip fracture patients were investigated regarding hip geometry. There were 33 men of mean age 76 +/- 10 years, and 92 women of mean age 78 +/- 9 years. Patients with previous hip surgery were excluded. Hip geometry (hip-axis length, width of collum femoris, and femoral shaft and neck-shaft angle) were registered on both plain radiographs and DEXA scans performed withi...

Preoperative Bone Mineral Density and Bone Turnover in Women Before Primary Knee Arthroplasty

PURPOSE The preoperative prevalence of osteoporosis and/or osteopenia and overall bone quality in prospective total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients may affect the postoperative outcome after prosthetic insertion into the bone. The purpose of this study is to determine the baseline bone mineral density (BMD) and bone turnover in preoperative, female, primary TKA patients. METHODS We prospecti...

Erratum to: frequent femoral neck osteolysis with Birmingham mid-head resection resurfacing arthroplasty in young patients.

BACKGROUND Mid-head resection total hip resurfacing arthroplasty was promoted as an alternative to traditional total hip resurfacing for patients with poor femoral head bone quality or abnormal femoral head morphology, because those patients are at high risk of failure with traditional total hip resurfacing. It is a large-headed metal-on-metal device that uses a short, bone-conserving stem. Goo...
